Though school may not be in session during the summer, the Woodford County school district is still buzzing with activity! One of the highlights of these warm months is our summer feeding program, which started on Monday, June 3, and will run through Friday, August 2. The summer feeding program in Woodford County has grown exponentially over the past few years. In 2014, roughly 3,000 free meals were distributed during the summer months. This number grew to 12,000 meals just four years later.
Courtney Quire, Food Service Coordinator, thought strategically about how to increase participation in this wonderful program. Mrs. Quire believed that establishing more food service sites would encourage more people to take advantage of the program. She considered where children might be spending significant amounts of time during the summer, places such as the Woodford County Library and Falling Springs, and reached out to see if these locations would be interested in serving as summer food service sites. Courtney also established a partnership with several churches in the area. In 2019, nine churches will be providing meals at their Vacation Bible Schools through the summer feeding program.
The summer menus are full of variety! A few lunch options are as follows: chicken sliders, pulled BBQ pork sandwiches, veggie pasta, fresh fruit, and so much more! These standard dishes are accompanied with some “fun things” that Courtney loves to see the kids try. An example of this is the Cowboy Caviar, which is a side dish made of beans, tomatoes, corn, and cilantro - so fresh and yummy!
Wednesdays are pizza days! This is certainly a crowd favorite for students participating in Enrichment Wednesdays!
The full menu for each day as well as a list of the sites and times are available at WoodfordSchools.org under the “Food Service” section. Meals are entirely free for anyone who is 18 years old or younger. If you are over 18 years old, it is $2 for breakfast and $3 for lunch.
